Ceremony of the Feet

Go ahead. Photo by Kyla
First, take off your shoes.

Next, put your feet on some surface, could be your bed, or a rug, bare floor, even the wall. Any surface will do.

Feel the sensory system in the soles of your feet where they touch that surface. Just feel all of that, take it into awareness, be as attentive to the detail of sensation as you can be.

Move your toes a bit, flatten your feet down on the surface, drink in as much sensation as your feet have surface area for.

Earth body is talking to your body, through your feet. No words, no definitions of that kind, but definitely a flow of communication is happening now.

If it is not too cold, do this outside, on the bare ground. Even if where you live is all paved, it is still good to step outside and stand on the Earth barefoot.  Let the communication of how the Earth is come in to you, right here, right now.

Try to forget about words, when you do this, just for a moment.

What would happen if you did this, consciously, every day for a month?

What if, when you have a decision or choice to make, before you consider what to do, you place the bare soles of your feet on the ground for a moment, open to being informed by that contact?

Among all the uncertainties which may seem to be multiplying around and within us, there is one certainty that is becoming stronger by the day: the need, and the benefit, of being honestly, authentically present here, grounded in the Earth.

I offer the ceremony of the feet as a simple, democratic, humble, and irrevocably honest way to build a strong grounding in your life. And, perhaps, to be surprised by some of what the Earth knows how to give back to you.

  1. I love this. Flights of fancy are okay, but being 'grounded' helps keep us in touch with reality. :)

  2. Yep. After all, the Earth is *already* flying through space, right? So it could be all we really need to do is learn to hang on properly. :D
